One of the most exciting parts of having a fine portrait created is the moment when you hang your portrait in your home. It is the moment you have been waiting for since your consultation, when you first discussed your portrait vision with William. You have been waiting anxiously for the portrait to be completed, and it is truly breathtaking when you ultimately see the portrait of your loved one adorning one of your walls.
This portrait is of the lovely Brynn Covell. William did Brynn’s older sister, Keeland’s, portrait in 2007, and the Covells were so excited to have a portrait created of their second daughter. William was thrilled with the opportunity to work with the Covells again, and to create a piece that would compliment their first daughter’s portrait. Working with past clients is such a joy. Building relationships with families is one of the most treasured aspects of William’s career.
Brynn’s mother, Lisa, wrote to William this week.
“My husband hung Brynn’s portrait last night and it is STUNNING!!! I absolutely love it!
Thank you so much!!”
Thank you, Lisa for sharing! It means so much to William when a client sends him pictures of their portraits displayed in their home. It really makes his day! If you have not told him about your experience hanging your portrait, please do so! He would love to hear from you and feature your portrait on our blog. William came across a fascinating article that he would like to share with you. The article explains an experiment designed “to see what happens in the brain when you look at beautiful paintings.” Volunteers underwent brain scans while being shown various paintings. The volunteers had little knowledge of art, so their experience would not be altered by current styles or the popularity of artists.
“What we found is when you look at art, whether it is a landscape, a still life, an abstract or a portrait, there is strong activity in that part of the brain related to pleasure,” said Professor Semir Zeki, chair in neuroaesthetics at University College London. The art that the volunteers considered to be the most beautiful increased blood flow in a certain part of the brain by as much as 10%, the equivalent to gazing at a loved one, the article says. William found the following conclusion to be particularly interesting: ” The blood flow increased for a beautiful painting, just as it increases when you look at somebody you love.” Looking at art induces a pleasurable sensation.
Imagine the effect of looking at not only a beautiful painting, but a beautiful painting of your loved ones! Fine portraits are a source of happiness in the home for your family, and for generations to come.
The arts often suffer from budget cuts in difficult economic times. It is so sad that something which gives us great pleasure is often ignored when we need it most. It is important not to forget how much joy art brings to our lives.
Please give us a call at the studio to discuss having a beautiful portrait created of someone you love. 919.493.2467.

William was honored by the opportunity to create a portrait that would accompany the announcement of the Gresham Pottenger Stark Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Durham, NC.
David Pottenger, Lori Stark and Kay Gresham were fun to work with in the creation of this portrait. They gave William creative license to design a unique composition for their announcement, as opposed to choosing a more traditional business portrait in the studio. Having known all three of them for years, William was able to collaborate with the group and come up with a dynamic idea that would become a striking portrait. The portrait was a big hit when it ran in all of the papers. Thank you Dave, Kay and Lori for the opportunity! Whether it’s a business or family portrait, William loves to create something different and eye catching. Give us a call when you are ready to create something unique for your family or business!

Above is a portrait of the lovely Vernal family at their home away from home. T.R, Collin and Georgia have grown up playing at this beautiful horse farm in Raleigh. N.C. The farm has been there for 30-40 years, and is maintained by Ms. Rae Williams, a family friend who has been like a grandmother to the children.
This special place provided the perfect opportunity for William to create a portrait of the children in a setting not only beautiful, but meaningful.
A portrait can capture the setting of your fondest memories.
Share your personal paradise with William and have your portrait created in a place that you treasure.

We got the nicest note from Lisa McGeough saying how pleased she was with her daughter Caroline’s new portrait.
“We cannot be more thrilled with Caroline’s portrait. It is absolutely breath-taking and looks particularly beautiful in our foyer. The family loved it and stared at it to such an extent that Caroline actually had to distract them with a comment, “The real me is over here and I talk!” We all had quite a laugh over that. Where it is positioned, I can see it from the family room, as I come down the stairway from the 2nd floor and as I come around the corner from my bedroom. It makes me smile every time and will continue to do so for many, many years to come. Thanks so much and Happy New Year!”
Lisa and Caroline came to us through the Charlotte Heart Ball last February. I really enjoyed creating this portrait with them to commemorate Caroline’s graduation from Duke University.
